About us

MathsMap is the creation of Ray Maher and Mike Powell. It is designed to help teachers to plan the teaching and learning of mathematics based on the accurate assessment of the progress of each pupil.  MathsMap is based entirely on real experience in real classrooms in primary schools throughout the UK and will always reflect best practice in the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Ray Maher

Ray has over 25 years' experience teaching in the classroom.  He became Senior Maths Consultant and Assistant Primary Strategy Manager in a Yorkshire LEA where he provided teacher training and in-school consultancy. During this time Ray dedicated himself to developing courses and resources, together with Fieryideas, that are innovative and enjoyable. Resources such as 10 Maths Miracles, Busy Bees and the Numeracy Passport have been instrumental in some schools for raising standards in mathematics.
After doing courses for national educational providers such as Andrell Education and PfL, Ray has branched out independently. He presently works in several LEAs throughout the UK as well as working internationally in Hong Kong, Qatar, Oman, Dubai, Guernsey, France, Belgium, Spain and Indonesia as a Maths Facilitator.
Since becoming an independent maths consultant, Ray has worked alongside teachers and Head Teachers to raise standards in mathematics. It is as a result of working in a variety of different schools that the idea for MathsMap was founded. It has been designed as a support mechanism for teachers so that children’s assessments can inform planning.

Mike Powell

Mike has an unusual profile which combines experience in the classroom, detailed knowledge of educational data and systems, and most recently a solid reputation for helping schools to accelerate their improvement by using data and systems more effectively.

After gaining experience as a maths teacher in the 1980s Mike worked for twenty years in the software industry delivering technical and consultancy services, particularly for local government and central government agencies.  In 2003 he came to work in Bradford, becoming an expert in the use of data and systems to help school improvement, particularly with regard to pupil assessment and tracking.  Since 2008 Mike has run his own company, Mike Powell Associates Limited, working with the headteachers and other staff in many schools in the Bradford district, particularly those in challenging circumstances, helping them to understand and use data more effectively and to prepare for Ofsted inspections.

Ray and Mike have worked together since 2003 and in 2010 they created the concept of MathsMap.
